Seven years after the iconic harbourside building closed its doors, slated for demolition, the new-look IMAX Theatre is finally back in operation, with a new screen, new seats and flashy new building in the same spot in Darling Harbour.
Having faced repeated delays due to Covid impacts and ownership issues, the cinema - which is now operated by Event - will officially open its doors on Wednesday, October 11.
First opened in 1996, the cinema became a landmark attraction due to its location, colossal screen and uniquely-designed 45 minute features before being shut down 20 years later.
Though the set-up has changed in the new premises, including 4K laser projection that uses a system with a new optical engine and custom-designed lenses, the star of the show is still the new screen, which measures nearly 700 square metres, ensuring it remains one of the largest in the world.
Tickets are on sale for the opening week, which will feature ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ and new Gareth Edwards flick ‘The Creator’, with more to come. Get your tickets here.
