It took seven games but the Canterbury Bulldogs are finally off the mark in the Ron Massey Cup for 2023 - and they did it in style with a convincing win over fellow strugglers Penrith Brothers

The 36-12 win was led by doubles to back-rower Lipoi Hopoi and winger Jonathan Sua, who also kicked four goals for a personal haul of 16 points.

Meanwhile the top-of-the-table clash between St Marys and Glebe was surprisingly one-sided, with the Saints securing a dominant 22-point victory in which they were rarely troubled by the Reds, who’ve now lost two in a row. The Saints now hold a four-point lead atop the table.

Hills blew their chance to move into second after a shock loss to Ryde-Eastwood, who ended their own run of poor form in convincing fashion.

In the Sydney Shield it’s a similar story for the Saints, who made light work of the struggling Reds despite playing with a man less for a quarter of the game after two separate sin-bins.

Brothers and Hills District both stayed in touch with the leaders after securing their own wins over Moorebank and Ryde respectively, but the game of the weekend has to go the battle between Cabramatta and Wentworthville. It was an intense back and forth that featured a double from star centre Emosi Alamoti, and was ultimately decided by a single point - a field goal kicked by Cabramatta halfback Riley Lack.
