For the next few months, the Granville Centre Art Gallery will play host to a unique exhibition of art and sport titled CHAMPS, showcasing innovative interpretations of the impact of sport on our society and culture.
The exhibit contains works from a number of local artists from all walks of life, with a wide range of subject matter covered.
The exhibition examines everything, from the cultural impact of sport on the individual and society, to the anxieties of athletes prior to performance and the disappointment of those who miss out by the smallest possible margin.
From the impact of the Springbok protests during the apartheid era, to the cult-like nature of some modern fitness establishments and the changing face of 'expert opinion', and even the internal psychological obstacles athletes must overcome, the exhibition covers a wide span of subject matter in an insightful and personal way.
The works cover a wide range of media, including sculpture, photo and video, while the entryway is full of memorabilia and official materials from the Sydney 2000 Olympics - the starting point for this journey through the gallery.
A free exhibition, CHAMPS is open until June 24. For more information, visit the website.
