NSW Health has issued an urgent warning to for people to ensure their Tetanus vaccinations are up to date after the state recorded its first death from the rare but preventable disease this century.

A further two, non-fatal cases have been recorded in the state this year, sparking concerns after two of the three sufferers were found to have no recorded vaccinations. The third recorded their last shot over 30 years ago.

Contrary to popular beliefs surrounding rust, Tetanus is caused by bacteria found in soil that enters the body through wounds, producing toxins that attack a victim's nervous system.

All three of the recorded cases have been contracted in the same fashion, with a minor wound in the lower leg becoming contaminated by garden soil. The most common sufferers of the affliction are elderly women who have not been previously vaccinated, according to reports.

Symptoms of Tetanus can include jaw cramping, muscle and stomach spasms, painful muscle stiffness, difficulty swallowing, constant headaches, seizures, fever, profuse sweating as well as sudden changes in heart rate and blood pressure. Symptoms can begin to show anywhere from one to three weeks after infection. If you are concerned that you may be suffering, see your doctor immediately.

Vaccinations are currently offered to children under the National Immunisation Program, but older generations may either be unvaccinated or be decades removed from their last booster.
