Historic Parramatta Park is set for the biggest funding boost since it was created in 1858, with confirmation of a $56 million upgrade thanks to the WestInvest program.
The upgrade will see the construction of new pedestrian and cycle bridges, as well as a 3-kilometre pathway to ease access between the Parramatta CBD, Commbank Stadium and the Health Precinct in Westmead. The funding will also help with the restoration of the century-old wisteria garden.
The heritage-listed location receives approximately 2 million visitors annually, a number that is expected to rapidly increase over the coming years.
“We’ve learned just how important these green open spaces are because of the pandemic," Minister for Infrastructure, Cities and Active Transport Rob Stokes told 7News.
"Frankly, any amount of money is worth it when we’re talking about Parramatta’s big backyard."
"One of the trials we did during COVID was to open up Parramatta Park as a (vehicle-free) People's loop, to make it safer for cyclists, walkers and parents with prams to get around a beautiful 3.2km loop.
"Parramatta Park sees 2 million visitors every year, which will increase by about 65 percent in less than the next 15 years. We've got to be ready."
