Toyota has issued a mass recall of a variety of popular Yaris models amid fears that a manufacturing defect could see the vehicle's suspension collapse or detach.

The cars in question are Yaris petrol and hybrid models made between 2020 and 2023, with variants including the manual and automatic Ascent Petrol Hatches.

'During the manufacturing process, the ball joint insertion portion of front lower suspension arm may have developed minor cracking,' the recall announcement read.

'If the vehicle is repeatedly driven on bumpy and/or uneven road surfaces, the cracks may spread, and the front lower suspension arm may break allowing the ball joint to dislodge.

'In the worst-case scenario, vehicle stability may be compromised increasing the risk of a crash.'

The recall is expected to affect over 7,500 cars, with drivers advised to secure a vehicle service immediately - although Toyota has said they will endeavour to contact registered owners of all affected cars to ensure inspections are completed.

All recall-related repairs will be free of charge. If you don't receive a call but have concerns about your vehicle, don't hesitate to call the Toyota Recall Assist Helpline on 1800 987 366.
